Japanese is spoken by roughly 126 million people in around 18 territories. Around 99% of first-language Japanese speakers live in Japan. Most of the remainder live in the United States (notably California and Hawaii), and Brazil (mostly in the states of São Paulo and Paraná).
The history of Japanese is something of a mystery, partly because its relationships with other languages remains poorly understood.
Territory size shows the proportion of all people who speak Japanese as a first language that live in that territory.
