There are a very large number of skin diseases which cause considerable distress. Melanoma and other skin cancers Map 426, are not included here. Skin infections not secondary to an underlying skin disease are included in Other infectious diseases no map. Some common skin diseases can reduce the resistance of the skin to infection which can be serious. Otherwise skin conditions that can be fatal are rare.

Skin diseases caused 0.12% of all deaths worldwide in 2002, an average of 11 deaths per million people per year.
