Hepatitis C is an infection of the liver due to Hepatitis C virus which is spread, like hepatitis B, by blood products and sexual activities. Often there is no obvious initial infection, but about 50% eventually get chronic liver disease (chronic hepatitis). About 5% get cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) of whom perhaps 15% get cancer of the liver. A vaccine exists. Hepatitis C caused 0.09% of all deaths worldwide in 2002 with an average of 9 deaths per million people, but deaths from liver cancer are counted separately. |
