Map No. 69

Valuables is a category for items that are particularly expensive. These are often ‘luxury’ items such as watches, jewellery and musical instruments. Also included in this category are precious stones and metals. Income from the export of valuables is 3.4% of all income from exports. More money is spent importing ‘valuables’ than on importing medicines worldwide.

The highest per person exports (US$ net) are from Botswana. If the revenue from net valuables exports, often diamonds, were divided equally between the population of Botswana each person would earn US$ 1051 a year. In Botswana 400 000 people live on less than US$ 1 a day.

"There are no numbers or measurements to truly describe how to find your perfect diamond ... ultimately, it is the diamond that chooses you." Andrew Coxon, 2006

Territory size shows the proportion of worldwide net exports of valuables (in US$) that come from there. Net exports are exports minus imports. When imports are larger than exports the territory is not shown.
