Storms include cyclones, hurricanes, tornados, tropical storms, typhoons, and winter storms. The majority of all storm deaths between 1975 and 2000 occurred in Bangladesh: 138,987 people died due to a cyclone in 1991. Of all the storm deaths during this period, 72% were in Southern Asia. The highest rates of deaths caused by storms are mainly in island territories or territories with significant coastlines. The twenty territories with the highest storm-death rate are all located wholly or partly between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. |
"The weather that accompanies a cyclone is torrential rain along with high winds; inundation by surge is, however, the most terrifying event." Sazedur Rahman, 2001 |
Territory size shows the proportion of all people who have died in disasters due to storms, who died there, between 1975 and 2000. A disaster, here, is an event which overwhelms local resources.
